Everything about Rutherglen And Hamilton West Uk Parliament Constituency totally explainedRutherglen and Hamilton West is a burgh constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which was first used in the general election of 2005. It covers almost all of the former constituency of Glasgow Rutherglen and most of the former constituency of Hamilton South, and it elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
Boundaries
As created by the Fifth Review of the Boundary Commission for Scotland the constituency is one of six covering the Dumfries and Galloway council area, the Scottish Borders council area and the South Lanarkshire council area. The other five constituencies are: Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, Dumfries and Galloway, Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale, East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow and Lanark and Hamilton East.
The Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency covers part of the South Lanarkshire council area. The rest of the council area is covered by the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale constituency, the East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow and the Lanark and Hamilton East constituency. The Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale constituency also covers part of the Dumfries and Galloway council area and part of the South Borders council area.
The terms of the Rutherglen and Hamilton West name refer to the town of Rutherglen and the west of the town of Hamilton.
Members of Parliament
- 2005–present: Tommy McAvoy, Labour Co-operative, who was previously MP for Glasgow Rutherglen. In 2005 he was opposed by the Glasgow born architect and Aldershot Tory councillor, Peter Crerar, who was the great nephew of the Red Clydesider and longstanding Labour (and Independent Labour Party Party) Gorbals councillor, Alick Mackay.
